🙋 Recommended for

  • Those who want to make a high-quality side dish in 10 minutes without using the stove on hot summer days.
  • Those who want a moist, rice-stealing side dish with the fragrant perilla leaf aroma intact.

Ingredients needed 🛒3 servings

  • 40 perilla leaves
  • 1/2 onion
  • a little green part of green onion
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon Korean sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon anchovy fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon gochugaru
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
  • a little whole sesame seeds

Recipe 🍳

  1. Soak perilla leaves in water for about 5 minutes, then wash them one by one under running water and shake off the water.
  2. Slice 1/2 onion very thinly and chop the green onion finely to prepare the vegetable garnish.
  3. In a large bowl, combine 4 tablespoons soy sauce, 1/2 tablespoon Korean sesame oil, 1 tablespoon anchovy fish sauce, 1 tablespoon gochugaru, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic; mix well until the sugar dissolves to make the seasoning sauce.
  4. Add the sliced onion and green onion to the seasoning sauce and mix so that the seasoning is evenly distributed.
  5. Place 2 perilla leaves at a time overlapping on the bottom of a microwave-safe container, and top with a little of the seasoned vegetable mixture.
  6. Repeat this process, stacking the leaves neatly.
  7. Cover the container with plastic wrap and leave a small vent for steam to escape.
  8. Microwave for 2 minutes to steam gently.
  9. When you take it out, while it's still steaming, sprinkle whole sesame seeds evenly to finish.
  1. Wash the perilla leaves clean and drain; slice the onion and green onion thinly.
  2. Make the seasoning sauce with soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, minced garlic, etc., and mix in the sliced vegetables.
  3. Layer the perilla leaves and seasoning alternately in a container, cover with plastic wrap, and microwave for 2 minutes.

Cooking tips 💡

  • To add deep savory flavor to the seasoning sauce, the secret is to mix in 1 spoonful of anchovy fish sauce in addition to regular soy sauce.
  • Perilla leaves wilt quickly in the microwave, so don't cook too long; just 2 minutes is perfect.
  • Even if you don't spread the seasoning meticulously, just dolloping it here and there will let the moisture even out the flavor during steaming.
