Solo Cooking God's Homemade Dongpaeok

A super simple homemade version of Dongpaeok made by simmering over low heat using cola's tenderizing effect and the herbal aroma of Ssanghwatang, without any spices

🙋 Recommended for

  • Those who want to enjoy a restaurant-quality Chinese-style meat dish at home with minimal effort
  • Home cooks looking to create unique, high-quality dishes using leftover cola or Ssanghwatang
  • People who want to experience the authentic flavor and tender texture of Dongpaeok without buying complicated spices

Ingredients needed 🛒3 servings

  • Grilling pork belly 600g
  • Cola 2 cups
  • Ssanghwatang 1 bottle
  • Minced garlic 1 tablespoon
  • Oyster sauce 4 tablespoons
  • Green onion as needed

Recipe 🍳

  1. Lay the grilling pork belly 600g flat in the bottom of a deep pan or pot.
  2. Pour the cola 2 cups and one full bottle of Ssanghwatang, available at pharmacies or convenience stores, evenly over the meat.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and 4 tablespoons of oyster sauce to enhance flavor and umami.
  4. Turn the heat to low and simmer gently until the liquid reduces to a desirable consistency.
  5. As the ingredients reduce, the pork naturally develops a rich, appetizing dark brown color.
  6. When the sauce thickens to a sticky consistency, turn off the heat and remove the pork belly, slicing it into bite-sized pieces.
  7. Place a generous amount of finely chopped green onion or chives on the serving plate, then arrange the cooked pork belly attractively on top.
  1. In a pot, lay the pork belly, then add cola, Ssanghwatang, minced garlic, and oyster sauce according to the specified amounts.
  2. Simmer over low heat until the sauce thickens and the pork is fully infused with a deep color.
  3. Slice the pork into bite-sized pieces and arrange them neatly on a plate lined with chopped green onion.

Cooking tips 💡

  • If the sweetness from cola seems too strong, mix half cola with half water for a balanced taste.
  • Avoid high heat, as boiling rapidly may burn the sauce before the meat becomes tender—always use a gentle simmer.
  • An excellent way to use up leftover flat cola that’s lost its fizz.
