Ttukdak Hyung's Mexican Salad

A nostalgic drinking snack of crunchy salted cabbage and cucumber mixed with crab sticks and eggs, tossed in savory mayonnaise.

🙋 Recommended for

  • Those who miss the crunchy, old-style retro salad from Western-style restaurants of the past.
  • Parents looking for nutritious snacks for kids or easy beer snacks for dads.
  • Anyone seeking a light and savory filling to go with morning bread or crackers.

Ingredients needed 🛒3 servings

  • Shredded cabbage, appropriate amount
  • Sliced onion, a little
  • 1 cucumber
  • Salt, a little
  • Eggs, enough
  • Seasoned salt, a little
  • Crab sticks, appropriate amount
  • Sliced ham, a little
  • Shredded carrot, a little
  • Mayonnaise, generously
  • Honey mustard, a little
  • Pepper, a little

Recipe 🍳

  1. In a bowl, add finely shredded cabbage and onion. Remove the center seeds of the cucumber, slice thinly, and add to the bowl.
  2. Sprinkle salt over the vegetables and toss well. Let them pickle for about 30 minutes to retain crunchiness.
  3. While the vegetables are pickling, lightly beat eggs with a pinch of seasoned salt. Microwave for 2 minutes and 30 seconds to make oil-free scrambled eggs.
  4. After 30 minutes, squeeze the pickled vegetables as dry as possible using a cloth or your hands, then transfer to another bowl.
  5. Add torn crab sticks, thinly sliced ham and carrot, and the cooled scrambled eggs to the bowl with the drained vegetables.
  6. Squeeze in plenty of mayonnaise, add honey mustard and pepper, then gently toss everything together without crushing the ingredients. Serve.
  1. Pickle shredded cabbage, onion, and cucumber in salt for 30 minutes, then squeeze out water by hand.
  2. Mix eggs with seasoned salt and microwave for 2 minutes 30 seconds to make moist egg garnish.
  3. Combine pickled vegetables with crab sticks, ham, carrot, and eggs, then toss with mayonnaise and mustard sauce.

Cooking tips 💡

  • Since cucumbers have a lot of water, scrape out the center seeds with a spoon before using to prevent the salad from becoming watery over time.
  • Squeeze the vegetables as dry as possible to maximize the crunchy, addictive texture.
  • This salad is delicious on its own, but it's also great as a canapé on crackers or as a filling in warm morning bread rolls for a harmonious sandwich.
