Jung Ho-young's Potato Gratin

A smooth and rich potato gratin made quickly and easily using only a microwave, without needing an oven

🙋 Recommended for

  • Those who want to make a fancy gratin at home without an oven
  • People who love the combination of creamy potatoes and rich, savory cheese
  • Parents looking for nutritious snacks for kids or those seeking light wine and beer pairings

Ingredients needed 🛒2 servings

  • 2 large potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 250ml heavy cream
  • a pinch of salt
  • adequate amount of ketchup or tomato sauce
  • generous amount of mozzarella pizza cheese
  • a little parmesan cheese powder
  • a little olive oil

Recipe 🍳

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into suitable-sized pieces, then place in a microwave-safe dish.
  2. Add a pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon of minced garlic to the potato pieces, then lightly coat with olive oil.
  3. Cover the dish with its lid and microwave until the potatoes are soft and easily crumbled.
  4. Pour 250ml of heavy cream into a pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and a pinch of salt, then simmer until the sauce thickens.
  5. Mash the cooked potatoes thoroughly with a fork, mix in the reduced cream sauce, then spread a thin layer of ketchup on top.
  6. Sprinkle generously with mozzarella pizza cheese and parmesan cheese powder, then microwave again to melt the cheese.
  7. Finish by lightly charring the cheese surface with a torch to give it a golden, slightly smoky aroma.
  1. Cook chopped potatoes with salt, garlic, and olive oil in the microwave, then mash them.
  2. Boil heavy cream with garlic and salt to create a thick sauce.
  3. Mix mashed potatoes with cream sauce, ketchup, and cheese, then melt in the microwave and finish with a torch.

Cooking tips 💡

  • If you don’t have a torch for charring the cheese, you can use an air fryer instead of the microwave for the final step.
  • The cream sauce must be reduced sufficiently—do not let it remain too runny; it should be thick enough to blend smoothly with the potatoes.
  • For added texture, mix in corn kernels or roasted bacon bits according to your preference.
