Cooking tips

  • If using store-bought minced garlic with high moisture content, it can splatter in the oil. It's best to wrap it in paper towels or a cloth to squeeze out excess water before use.
  • Since this recipe uses only oil and no water, it's crucial to reduce the heat to the lowest setting after adding the rice cakes to prevent the garlic from burning and to ensure the rice cakes cook through evenly.
  • If the dried shrimp are large, lightly chop them with a knife before adding to better infuse their savory flavor and aroma into the oil.
  • Besides wheat flour rice cakes, using rice cakes or thin tteokguk (rice cake soup) rice cakes also works well as they absorb the seasoning nicely.

Recommended for

  • Those who love the rich aroma of garlic and the nutty flavor of oil.
  • Those who want to try a different kind of snack recipe instead of the usual red gochujang tteokbokki.
  • Those looking for an easy-to-make snack to enjoy with beer at home.
